Why doesn't alternative media work for liberals? Well, let's be honest. We have the mainstream media and there is only a need for more extremism among truly fringe positions. Conservatives, on the other hand, were shut out for decades so they had to find alternate sources if they were going to be heard.
I'm not surprised Air America has folded. For one thing, Al Franken isn't very funny. He's funnier than Ann Coulter but just as shrill. For another thing, conservatives have a few positions they rally around and they resonate with working people. Lower taxes, small government. Those sound like pretty good things.
What do we have to rally around? Choice. 75% of America sees the word 'choice' and they think 'abortion.' It's hardly the most uplifting position so we end up having to put together a coalition of people under that banner and, to do it, we have to pretend every ridiculous position they hold is as valid and important as the big ones we all share.
It's a recipe for disaster. The Republicans should be voted out in a rout, just like Bush should have been routed in 2004, but I don't smell blood in the water. Liberals need to recognize that being soft on defense is not the way to get things done. Too many people feel like President Clinton's 'peace dividend' resulted in a lot of attacks that went unchallenged.
We have a long-standing tradition of liberals in the form of FDR, Kennedy, Pat Moynihan, Scoop Jackson and many others who were not soft on defense but they were unquestionably for the little guy.
The only person in that mold today, Joe Lieberman, has been ostracized by Democrats for not toeing the party line and abandoning Iraq.
Americans rarely vote against someone. They proved that in 2004. They will vote for someone who stands for liberal ideals provided they don't feel like the alternate plan is giving in to terrorists.
Sayonara Air America. I can't say I will miss you because I never listened to you. You're NPR, only not as funny. Or CBS, only not as rich. Like the elections in November, you probably weren't 'for' enough things. Being 'against' conservative radio wasn't enough.|W|P|115818357520873519|W|P|It Isn't All A Republican Conspiracy|W|P|perfectommy@gmail.com9/12/2006 02:41:00 PM|W|P|Chief Scientist|W|P|Of lives lost, broken and honoured

9/11 widow and media fave Kristen Breitweiser seemed interested in taking the high road ... but Ann Curry was having none of that. And let's not pretend Ann Coulter is the only one who can exploit people to get some attention. We might be inclined to forgive Curry, since she is an illiterate sock-monkey whereas trained lawyers should know better, but she didn't do any favors for big media journalism today.
Curry: "You know ... conservatives, as you know, well know, have attacked, criticized heavily 9/11 widows for, including you, for, for some of what you've said over these years, over these five years. In fact on this program, Ann Coulter, the writer, said something to, to Matt Lauer. Let's take a quick listen to what she said."
Then they play the clip where Ann Coulter amplified on her claims that 9/11 widows were milking their unfortunate fame.
Curry: "Your reaction to what, what Ann Coulter said. This has become politicized Kristen."
Kristen seemed pretty okay. "You know I, I say frankly kudos to Ann Coulter. I think that what she's doing is what I wrote the book to inspire every American to do which is to have your voice heard, to engage in the political process. What I find unfortunate about Miss Coulter is that when you disagree with her she doesn't feel that you have a right to an opinion and I think that's unpatriotic but I think everyone needs to have their voice heard. We live in a wonderful country and..."
WHA ...? Curry is not having it. By golly, they expected some 9/11 shrillness and they will get it one way or another. The Today Show got Kristen to blame Bush for 9/11 four times over the course of three weeks in 2004, so her training must have worn off since then.
Curry: "But she's saying that you used your grief. She, I mean she's, what, do you want to respond to that?"
Finally, Kristen acts like the trained monkey they brought her on to act like. "All I can say is that I, I hope she never knows what it's like to watch your husband get murdered on live worldwide television with your child standing next to you." Etc.
Good job, Kristen. You had every chance to make good points and not be an Ann Coulter of the left. And you blew it. But shame on Ann Curry for exploiting your grief too.|W|P|115801427621598152|W|P|The "Today" Show Cusses Out Coulter|W|P|perfectommy@gmail.com9/05/2006 01:30:00 PM|W|P|Chief Scientist|W|P|Ann Coulter on Chafee: 'They Shot the Wrong Lincoln':
Shoot-from-the-hip right-wing columnist Ann Coulter tossed off a screed yesterday that castigates R.I. Sen. Lincoln Chafee for being the scion of a wealthy Republican family. (President Bush escapes her wrath for the same crime of being his father's son, however. )
In Coulter's version of reality, Chafee was plucked from a stable and installed in the Senate upon his father's death:
When the farrier business proved too taxing for Chafee's intellect, he went into the family business — politics. His father died in office, and Lincoln was appointed by the governor to serve out the remainder of Pop's term in the U.S. Senate.
We who actually live here may remember that Chafee served six years on the Warwick City Council and had been mayor of Warwick for seven years when Sen. John Chafee died in 1999 and his son was appointed to fulfill his term. He won the seat on his own in 2000, beating Democratic Rep. Robert Weygand.
I hope Chafee's primary opponent, Steve Laffey, whose background as mayor of Cranston Coulter actually mentions, repudiates the support of this particular blonde cheerleader.
Wishing death on those she disagrees with is despicable and brings no honor to those she supports: The headline of this Coulter column is "They Shot the Wrong Lincoln."|W|P|115766117479905797|W|P|They Shot The Wrong Lincoln|W|P|perfectommy@gmail.com9/01/2006 07:36:00 PM|W|P|Chief Scientist|W|P|Summary: On Hannity & Colmes, Alan Colmes challenged Ann Coulter to distinguish her suggestion that the issue was "whether to assassinate or impeach" former President Bill Clinton from an upcoming film that dramatically portrays the assassination of President Bush.
In response, Coulter asserted that her suggestion came in the context of a description of "the entire history of impeachment, which we got from the British. I explained how we changed it here in America. In Britain ... one of the punishments [for impeachment] was hanging."
On the August 31 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes, right-wing pundit Ann Coulter attempted to differentiate her suggestion in High Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Case Against Bill Clinton (Regnery, 1998) that the issue was "whether to impeach or assassinate" former President Bill Clinton, from the plot of Death of a President (Borough Films), an upcoming film that dramatically portrays the assassination of President Bush.

Was it the art exhibit depicting a gun pointed at the President’s head with “Patriot Act” written underneath? Nope. Was it the buttons depicting the President pointing a gun at his own head with the phrase “end terrorism now?” Nope. How about the T-shirt depicting Tom DeLay’s committing suicide with the caption, “We can dream, can’t we?” Wrong, again.
HUMAN EVENTS Legal Affairs Correspondent Ann Coulter is the only person who can get liberals in such a tizzy. The offensive act is the title of her column this week, “They Shot the Wrong Lincoln.” The column was perfectly timed, incisive and critical of President Bush’s endorsement of liberal candidates Senators Lincoln Chafee (R.I.) and Joe Lieberman (Conn.). And the title—hilarious!
